About us

Hello! Welcome to One Million Upthreads. We are a platform dedicated to inspiring and encouraging creativity, reducing fashion waste, and advocating for a more sustainable fashion industry.
We believe in the power of upcycling and thrifting as a way to combat the staggering levels of waste generated by the fashion industry. Every year a staggering 92 million tonnes of textile waste end up in landfills from the 100 billion garments produced. This figure is predicted to go up.
By upcycling and reusing our clothes in exciting, adventurous and, many times, easy ways, we can:
Reduce waste
Save money
Create special, personal and loved clothing and outfits that we are NOT going to throw in landfill!
Inspire others to do the same

Our Mission
At One Million Upthreads, our mission is twofold:
To promote upcycling, reuse and sustainable fashion
To support critical advocacy organizations fighting for garment worker rights and fairer fashion industry practices.
Sustainability at Our Core
We are committed to [sustainability], not just in our ethos but in our operations. That’s why we use green hosting, ensuring that our website runs on servers powered by renewable energy.
Our platform is designed to be engaging and fun, making upcycling and thrifting a shared experience that connects people across the globe.

A Fun and
Interactive Experience
We want to make upcycling and reusing clothes exciting and
accessible to everyone.

Upvoting - upwards only
Users can upvote their favorite photos for being stylish, creative or bold, and we will showcase the most creative and inspiring transformations. You can check out our leaderboard to find the week’s and month’s most upvoted creations. Our concept of upvoting is meant to be a positive, motivating, and encouraging way to celebrate your upcycling efforts. Downvoting is definitely not allowed and we deliberately do not allow comments to ensure that our platform remains a safe and supportive space.

Community Challenge
If that’s not enough, we’ve set a community challenge: can we reach one million uploaded photos and if so how long will it take? Help us track our progress with our live counter top and central on our page. You can also sign up to our newsletter to guess how long it will take and be in with a chance of winning a prize. Let’s see if we can hit this milestone!

Our beginnings
One Million Upthreads is the brainchild of Julie Moorhouse, the founder of sustainable fashion and home platform Good Maker Tales. She says:
“After running Good Maker Tales for over three years I could see how dire the fashion industry’s impact on our planet was. At the same time I saw how strong the interest was in upcycling and reusing clothes. I’m also an ambassador for Remake and wanted to do something more to support them.
My idea was to create a fun and interactive platform to celebrate and share our fashion creations re-using old clothes. I hope that as many people as possible will share their upcycled outfits and repurposed designs, and encourage more to do so.
I love the idea of this being an inclusive, supportive and positive space. I hope you enjoy the site!”
